Giving nature a home...

Our gardens can play a critical role in supporting our local wildlife by extending their natural habitats.

One effective ways to enhance biodiversity in these spaces, is through the installation of birdhouses and bug hotels, into your green spaces.

Birdhouses

Birdhouses (or nest boxes) are a great way to provide shelter and nesting sites for birds that may struggle to find suitable natural locations.

Common garden species in the UK such as blue tits, great tits, sparrows and robins, will happily use 'artificial' nest boxes, particularly in spring and early summer.

They can also contribute to bird conservation by:

  • Offering protection from predators and harsh weather
  • Supporting successful breeding and rearing of chicks
  • Encouraging natural pest control through insect consumption

Installation Guidelines:

  • A quiet, sheltered location between 2–4 metres above ground, is perfect.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and prevailing winds.
  • All our birdhouses are made from hardwoods and treated with natural 'food-safe' treatments - perfect for both us and them!
  • All our birdhouses have drainage and ventilation - built in.
  • Once installed, it is good proactive to clean out the box ay the end of the season. All our birdhouses, feature a detachable panel, to ensure easy access.

Bug & Bee Hotels

Bug & bee hotels are designed to accommodate a range of beneficial invertebrates, within your garden. Made from natural materials, they provide safe spaces for insects to shelter, hibernate, and breed. These could include solitary bees, ladybirds, beetles, spiders and other insects.

The presence of a bug hotel can enhance garden health by:

  • Encouraging pollinators into your garden such as bees and butterflies.
  • Supporting natural predators of aphids and other pests.
  • Promoting decomposition and soil health through detritivores like woodlice.

Placement:

  • Bug & Bee Hotels are best placed in a warm, sheltered, and undisturbed area
  • Placing near flowering plants or a “wild” corner of the garden, can promote inhabitants and pollination.

Helping to promote family engagement in the garden...

Birdhouses and bug hotels are a great way to engage children with nature. They offer a great, hands-on learning experience about birds and insects and their role in the environment.

Observing the wildlife that make their home in a birdhouse or bug hotel, can encourage curiosity, patience, and care for living things, while helping children understand concepts like biodiversity and pollination in a practical and memorable way.
